In a saucepan, combine the rice with the milk; heat to scalding. In a bowl, beat the eggs with the sugar, salt, and vanilla. Stirring biskly, add about one-third of the hot rice mixture to the egg mixture. Pour the rice and egg mixture back into the saucepan; cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Stir in raisins, if desired, or top with fresh berries.
