Baked New England Brown Bread

  • 1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cups fine dry bread crumbs, unseasoned
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup dark molasses
  • 1/4 cup vinegar







Sift flour with baking soda and salt. Add bread crumbs; blend well. Cut in shortening until fine and mixture resembles meal. Combine egg, milk, molasses, and vinegar. Add the milk mixture to dry ingredients; stir until blended. Turn into two greased loaf pans 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. Bake at 375° for 35 to 40 minutes.
