Red Cabbage Recipe

Red Cabbage with Apple, Apple Jelly, and Red Wine
  • 2 pounds red cabbage
  • 1 apple
  • 2 tablespooons butter
  • 1 bay leaf
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 to 4 juniper berries, optional
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1 to 3 teaspoons apple jelly
  • dash ground cloves







Wash and shred cabbage. Slice apple. Melt butter in a large pan; add cabbage and apple and mix well. Season with salt, pepper, bay leaf, and juniper berries, if using. Cook in 1 cup of water over low heat until done, about 10 minutes. Add a little more water if needed. When liquid has evaporated, sprinkle wiht flour. Add red wine and apple jelly and cloves to taste. Serves 4.
